Macklan Robert Clendenin

Hair Stylist, Barber, Educator

A Bay Area native (Half Moon Bay), Macklan’s career started in 2005 when he attended Paul Mitchell the School San Diego. After graduation, he worked for a brief time as an educator-in-training before moving out into the field, working first at The Salon and Spa before finally finding a home at Philip Edwards Salon while also freelancing for parties, weddings and fashion shows.

In 2011 Macklan moved back to San Francisco and went to work for The San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology, a Paul Mitchell partner school in the south-of-market district. While at SFIEC, He quickly became their Cutting Specialist, evolving and expanding the current curriculum and training the rest of the education team in cutting. Moving into the role as the Barber Education Leader, Macklan spent 3+ years creating and curating all the education for the barber program that is still offered today.

After spending over 6+ years as an educator with Paul Mitchell at SFIEC, he decided to leave the school to work behind the chair as the Director of Education for People’s Barber and Shop, where he built them a custom, in-house, multi-shop educational system to help teach brand new barbers their basics, and to help sharpen the skills of the seasoned professionals.

In 2019 he was contracted by Rene Furterer to be one of their first National Cutting Educators, traveling around the country to teach all types of haircutting to salon professionals. From long layers to bald fades, he taught it all. Later that year he left People’s Barber and joined Fellow Barber as a Senior Barber and Educator.

Macklan has also been a barber consultant for The Wall Street Journal, developed his own Cutting System, “MECHANICS”, launched the educational web app “HairEducation.me”, and founded his own education company, “M Education”, focusing on the core principles of Passion, Dedication and Discipline. “M Education” is also sponsored by the #1 Japanese scissor company, Mizutani Scissors, striving to not only bring you the best in hybrid education but to offer you the best tools for your craft.

Being dual licensed in both Cosmetology and Barbering allows Macklan’s style of education to be accessible to hair cutters of any discipline, while his time with Paul Mitchell gave him experience educating everyone from a student on their first day in school, to the salon professional with decades of experience.
